Sweeping Iowa prairie landscape at golden hour

Iowa Deserves Better Cannabis Policy

Every year, thousands of Iowans face arrest for simple possession. Meanwhile, 24 states have legalized adult use. We're building the grassroots movement to bring Iowa's cannabis policy into the 21st century.

Rooted in Iowa. Driven by Community.

In Iowa, a first-time marijuana possession charge can mean up to six months in jail, a $1,000 fine, and a mandatory 48-hour minimum sentence — regardless of the amount. Black Iowans are arrested at more than seven times the rate of white Iowans for marijuana offenses, despite comparable usage rates. This isn't a policy that serves anyone.

The Iowa Cannabis Action Network is a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization working to change that. We advocate for decriminalization, expanded medical access, hemp industry protections, and evidence-based reform — through public education, grassroots mobilization, and direct legislative advocacy. Our coalition is nonpartisan, bringing together farmers, veterans, patients, business owners, and civic leaders from every corner of the state.

Why This Matters

0 Marijuana arrests in Iowa in 2022
0 Rate Black Iowans are arrested vs. white Iowans for marijuana
0 States that have legalized adult-use cannabis
0 Iowa households experiencing food insecurity

In a state that feeds the world, no Iowan should face jail time for a plant that's legal in half the country.

Three Pillars of Action

Policy Reform

Iowa made over 4,400 marijuana-related arrests in 2022 alone. We advocate for decriminalization, expanded medical access, hemp protections, and descheduling at both state and federal levels — centering the voices of Iowans most affected by current policy.

Community Initiatives

Nearly 11% of Iowa households are food insecure — a 57% increase from just three years ago. Our Iowa Victory Garden Initiative empowers communities to grow food, support local food banks, and rebuild the agricultural resilience Iowa was built on.

Public Education

Fear and misinformation have shaped Iowa's cannabis conversation for too long. We provide evidence-based resources and nonpartisan voter education so Iowans can make informed decisions about cannabis policy and civic participation.

Iowa food banks spent $9 million more in 2025 than the year before. We're helping communities fight back — one garden at a time.
